Alanda '18: Geodesic Structure and Inverted Pyramids

Alanda is the sculptural coffee table designed by Paolo Piva in 1982 and reissued by B&B Italia in 2018 as a tribute to the late designer. An icon of post-modern design, it combines architectural rigour with a striking aesthetic. The inverted pyramid grid that forms the base is not merely decorative but structural: it supports the glass top by creating a geodesic structure that distributes weight evenly, allowing wide spans with slender profiles.

Base: Structural Lightness and Visual Impact

The base is built from gloss black painted steel rods that intersect to form a three-dimensional grid of triangles and pyramids. The lattice lets light and sight pass through, reducing visual weight, while the inverted pyramids shift shape with the viewing angle, creating perspective games and shadow play. The structure evokes Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes, translating architectural principles into furniture scale.

Glass Top: Smoked or Extra Light

Smoked glass – dark grey-black semi-transparent tone, creates chromatic continuity with the black frame, unifying base and top into a single monolithic mass. It partially conceals the floor and filters reflections: ideal for bright spaces with large windows.
Extra light glass – high-purity transparent (low iron content), maximises clarity and visual lightness; the exposed structure becomes even more of a room protagonist. The top becomes a stage for books, magazines and art objects.

Two Sizes: Square and Scenic Rectangular

Model TA120 – Square 120×120 cm, H 27 cm: balanced format, ideal as a coffee table in front of a sofa, side element next to a chaise longue, or functional sculpture in entrance halls and conversation corners.
Model TA180 – Rectangular 180×120 cm, H 27 cm: strong scenic presence, the centrepiece in large living rooms with long sofas (240+ cm), ideal for multi-seating compositions, serving drinks, or as an architectural element defining zones in open-plan spaces and lofts.
