Maxalto, Antonio Citterio's Modern Neoclassicism

Maxalto was founded in 1975, when Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, founder of B&B Italia, decided to complement industrial sofa production with a workshop dedicated to woodworking. The name comes from the Venetian dialect "massa alto", meaning the highest. The first furniture pieces were designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa using techniques drawn from cabinetmaking and lutherie. Since 1993, Antonio Citterio has been the brand's sole designer: he signs every piece in the catalog and defines his work as modern neoclassicism.
The luxury of Maxalto is recognized by solid woods, the use of stone, and a design that evokes classical forms while updating them—brushed oak, Canaletto walnut, leather, bronze, and marble. The shapes look to the early 20th-century bourgeois home and interwar France, combined with contemporary comfort. Maxalto operates its own dedicated factory for wood and delicate materials while utilizing B&B Italia's research center. The result is evident when you combine a sofa, a bookcase, and a bed from different years: they belong in the same room as if you had chosen them all today.
