Louisiana: The Saddle That Becomes an Armchair
Vico Magistretti designed Louisiana in 1993 with the Centro Design Binfaré, drawing inspiration from an unusual typology for interior design: the horse saddle. The enveloping form, the exposed topstitching that precisely follows the rounded curves of the structure, the outer shell in hide — everything references that origin without stating it explicitly. It is a design you recognize at a glance: it looks like no other armchair — it is unmistakably Louisiana. The swivel castors are not a secondary functional detail: they change the way the armchair is used, making it mobile, fluid, able to follow whoever inhabits the space rather than being fixed to one corner.
Where to Place the Louisiana
The castors change the grammar of use of the Louisiana compared to a fixed armchair. It is not tied to a corner — it follows its user, moves closer to the fireplace in winter, shifts toward the light in summer, turns toward the person you are speaking with during a conversation. It works in the living room as a standalone seat or paired with the sofa, in the study as an alternative to a traditional office chair, and in the master bedroom as a statement piece beside the bed or dressing table. The coordinated pouf is a versatile element that completes the armchair as a footrest, doubles as an extra seat when needed and can serve as a handy surface for books, magazines or a breakfast tray — all on wheels, repositionable in a single gesture.
Construction: Two Levels of Quality
The Louisiana has a construction logic for its upholstery that is divided into two distinct parts — outer and inner — with different materials and functions for each. It is this separation that makes it a technically significant project as well as an aesthetically recognizable one.

FAQ Louisiana Armchair De Padova
Q1: What is the difference between the outer hide upholstery and the inner leather or fabric lining?
They are two materials with different functions and characteristics. The outer upholstery is in full-grain vegetable-tanned, aniline-dyed hide: it is fixed, non-removable, and forms the visible shell of the armchair — the element that gives Louisiana its distinctive silhouette. The inner upholstery is the part in contact with the sitter, in leather or fabric, and is fully removable via zip fastener: you can wash it or replace it over time. These are two independent choices: you can pair a light hide with a dark fabric, or a tone-on-tone leather — contact us to see the available combinations.
Q2: How do you care for the vegetable-tanned outer hide?
Full-grain vegetable-tanned hide is a living material: it absorbs the natural oils from the skin, develops a personal patina over time, and when properly cared for, improves with age rather than deteriorating. For routine maintenance, a soft slightly damp cloth is sufficient to remove dust. Approximately every six months, it is advisable to apply a nourishing product specifically formulated for natural hide (not for coated or synthetic leather) to maintain suppleness and elasticity. De Padova publishes full care instructions in the materials section of their website — we will send them to you at the time of purchase.
Q3: Is a Fire Resistant version available for contract use?
Yes. The Louisiana is available in an FR (Fire Resistant) version on request, with padding materials compliant with current fire safety regulations — a requirement that is often mandatory for hotels, restaurants, public spaces and high-end contract projects. The FR version does not alter the external appearance or the available upholstery options. Contact us specifying the intended use and the required reference standard (EN, NFPA or other): we will evaluate the correct configuration together and prepare a dedicated quote.
