Nena: The Return of a 1984 Project
Richard Sapper designed Nena in 1984 for B&B Italia, which put it back into production in 2026 and presented it at the Salone del Mobile among the collection's new products. The reissue preserves the project's theme—an armchair combining lightness, practicality, and flexibility thanks to the aluminum tubular frame and articulated joints that make it foldable.
Richard Sapper
Richard Sapper was born in 1932. He studied philosophy, anatomy, and engineering, and graduated in business administration from the University of Munich. He began his career in the styling department of Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart, then moved to Milan, where he worked for Gio Ponti and La Rinascente. With Marco Zanuso, he designed the Algol television (1964) and the TS 502 radio (1965) for Brionvega. Among his best-known projects are the Grillo telephone for Siemens (1965), the Tizio lamp for Artemide (1972), the 9090 coffee maker for Alessi (1978), and ThinkPad laptops for IBM and Lenovo (from 1992). He received the Compasso d'Oro career award in 2014 and passed away in Milan on December 31, 2015.

B&B Italia Nena Armchair FAQ
Opening, space, upholstery, and delivery: direct answers.
How do you open and close Nena?
To open it, with the armchair vertical, grasp the backrest above the armrests and press the hook on the rear crossbar until it unlocks, then lift the armchair slightly to allow the rear legs to open. To close it, lift the armchair firmly until the locking hook clicks into place.
Is the upholstery removable? How do you clean it?
Yes, the upholstery is completely removable. For routine cleaning, simply dust with a soft, dry cotton cloth and immediately dry any spilled liquids with absorbent paper. For aluminum, use products for delicate surfaces or lukewarm water and neutral soap, avoiding abrasives, solvents, and alcohol. For leather, B&B Italia offers a dedicated kit (code SETPN).
Is the armchair available immediately and in what finishes?
The promotional price refers to the ready-to-ship armchair in Loira Mattone fabric with a honey-stained okoumé panel. For a new order, the seat and backrest panel can be chosen between honey-stained okoumé and satin black, while the structure and extractable element are semi-gloss black painted. Upholsteries are available in fabric and leather in many shades. Contact us for upholsteries, production times, and a quote.
