Jean-Marie Massaud was born in Toulouse in 1966 and graduated in 1990 from Les Ateliers, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris. During the early years of his career, he worked between Asia and France before opening his own studio in Paris in 1994. There, he focused on industrial and furniture design, building relationships with brands such as Authentics, Baccarat, and Magis.

From Marc Berthier to Studio Massaud

His collaboration with Marc Berthier and his work on urban planning projects brought Massaud closer to architecture. In 2000, he co-founded Studio Massaud alongside Daniel Pouzet, expanding his practice from industrial products to architectural projects on an urban scale.

Essentiality and Emotion

Massaud works on industrial products and furniture design with an approach centered on the search for the essential and the person who will use the object. He builds every project around the senses, emotion, and an idea of vitality, carrying this method into all his collaborations. For B&B Italia, he designed Terminal 1, a seat that serves a double function as an armchair and a chaise longue, the Seven table, and the Overscale Flames outdoor oil candles made of resin with a matte painted metal structure. He also collaborates with Cassina, Poltrona Frau, Cappellini, Baccarat, Authentics, Magis, and AXOR Hansgrohe in the bathroom sector.

The Volcano-Shaped Stadium

In 2010, he designed the Omnilife Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico. Shaped like a volcano, the structure was engineered to minimize environmental impact, showcasing on an urban scale the same quest for the essential that characterizes his design objects.

AXOR and the Bathroom Collection

In 2005, he designed the WaterDream concept for AXOR, a bathroom environment envisioned as a natural landscape, which inspired the AXOR Massaud collection. In 2019, he introduced AXOR Edge, a collection of faucets crafted from solid brass blocks machined with millimeter-level precision.

Awards and Permanent Collections

His designs have won numerous awards and are part of the permanent collections of the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, the Chicago Athenaeum - Museum of Architecture and Design, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
