M16: The Chiavarina Reinterpreted
The M16 chair takes direct reference from the Chiavari chair, created in 1807 by cabinetmaker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, who reduced its structural sections to achieve an extremely lightweight yet sturdy chair. In subsequent decades, it was appreciated by Charles Albert of Sardinia and Napoleon III, and it is still used today in international institutional settings. Patrick Norguet takes this essential structure and transforms it into a version with armrests, preserving the lightness of the frame while introducing a sharper geometry consistent with contemporary use.
Patrick Norguet
Patrick Norguet was born in Tours in 1969 and studied industrial design at the École Supérieure de Design Industriel in Paris. He initially worked in the fashion and luxury sector, designing shop windows for Louis Vuitton before opening his own studio in Paris in 2000. That same year, his Rainbow Chair, produced by Cappellini, brought him international recognition. In 2005, he received the Designer of the Year award at Maison & Objet in Paris, and throughout his career, he has designed for brands such as Cassina, Alias, and Artemide.

Is the M16 seat available in fabric or leather?
No, the only two versions currently in production are the ash-veneered birch plywood seat and the woven natural reed seat.
What is the difference between the two seat versions?
The ash-veneered plywood follows the same color as the structure (bleached or black) and is easier to clean. The woven natural reed seat offers a more artisanal appearance and a softer surface, but requires greater care in daily maintenance.
Is the M16 also suitable for daily kitchen use?
Yes, the lightweight solid ash structure and veneered plywood surface make it suitable for frequent use, as well as for dining rooms or contract spaces.
