Not all Crinoline versions are suited for the same exposure: the polyethylene fiber weaving resists atmospheric agents, whereas the abaca version must be protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Write to us indicating where it will be placed, and we will help you choose the right model and cushion fabric.

Crinoline takes its name from the rigid petticoats that shaped 19th-century ballgowns, echoing their construction with a wide bowl at the base that is reflected in the seat and the curvature of the backrest.
The armchair features a fully woven backrest (mod. C5P) or a woven backrest combined with a section featuring a floral pattern design (mod. C5P_FL). There are two weaving versions available: one in polyethylene fiber for outdoor use, or one in two-tone abaca which must be kept in the shade, away from moisture and heat sources, making it unsuitable for open-air environments. The small armchair instead features a more compact, double-shell silhouette with polyethylene fiber weaving. The seat cushions have removable covers and are offered in a wide range of fabric categories specifically designed for outdoor use.

  • Cod. C5P_FL - 102 cm armchair, same shape as C5C with a floral pattern on the backrest, in an all-outdoor version. Argilla painted aluminum structure, argilla polyethylene fiber weaving.
  • Cod. C5P - 102 cm armchair, same shape without the decorative pattern on the backrest. Available in tortora structure and weaving, or argilla structure and weaving, to be specified upon ordering.
  • Cod. C3P - 76 cm small armchair, double-shell silhouette. Tortora painted aluminum structure, base and seat with tortora polyethylene fiber weaving.

Crinoline: The Shape That Defines the Silhouette

The curve of the base, echoed in the seat and backrest, builds a shape that recalls the bell-shaped skirts of 19th-century ladies, supported by the rigid undergarments of the same name. This curve is not an added ornament, but rather defines the character of the entire collection.

Patricia Urquiola: From Polytechnic to Her Own Studio

Patricia Urquiola studied architecture and design at the Universidad Politécnica in Madrid and the Politecnico di Milano, where she graduated under Achille Castiglioni. In Spain, she received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts and the Cross of Isabella the Catholic. She founded her own studio in 2001, working on industrial product design, hospitality, retail, and residential architecture, art direction, and strategic consulting. Her work is exhibited at the MoMA in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
