Bambola is the armchair from B&B Italia that is part of the Le Bambole collection, designed in 1972 by Mario Bellini. It is an icon of design and furnishing, as well as a generous, welcoming, and spacious seating system. In 1972, Mario Bellini broke the molds of both communication and design, starting with what makes the armchair special: the apparent absence of a supporting structure, actually made of steel tubulars covered with flexible and shaped polyurethane.
The Le Bambole armchair from 1972 had a steel structure immersed in polyurethane; a sinuous line traced a generous form that conveyed a sense of softness. Sitting in it was like being enveloped in an embrace and entering an almost physical relationship.
In 2022, for the 50th anniversary of the Le Bambole armchair, within a path of research and innovation, the company asked the question: Is there a way to revisit a design icon like Le Bambole by Mario Bellini? Changing the shape and design of a chair like Le Bambole wouldn't make sense; instead, sustainability is an intelligent path. The answer to the question was to revisit the seating system from within, leveraging contemporary technologies and making production more circular.
Le Bambole by B&B Italia aims to be circular and green because being innovative in 2022 cannot exclude being green. A new shell made of second-life polyethylene (recycled at 98%), produced by rotational molding and hollow inside, has been introduced. Moreover, 100% of the components of the Bambola armchair have been redesigned to allow for simple disassembly, even by the end consumer (ensuring repairability and recyclability of the parts). The result of this design, engineering, and production effort makes Le Bambole a product dedicated to circularity with the same comfort but using 70% less material.
The new collection includes the Bambola armchair, the two-seater Bibambola sofa, the Bamboletto double bed, and an updated three-seater sofa with a deeper seat, named Granbambola.
