The Lilum sofa by Maxalto is the only direct-seat sofa in the Maxalto range. The construction technique is mixed: the internal frame is made of steel tubes and profiles, the backrest is moulded using an in-house technology that ensures maximum precision for every profile, while the base is built using the classic technique of a laminated multi-layer wood frame with differentiated-density shaped polyurethane padding. The lower aluminium edge follows the sofa's profile and is available in four finishes: bronzed nickel, black chrome, graphite or amber. The piping profiles — a fabric-covered cord used as a border trim — always in the same color and material as the upholstery, define the band between seat and base as in a traditionally crafted artisan sofa. Available in fabric (removable), velvet or leather.

Lilum: The Sofa that Carries the Form of the Lily

The name that echoes the design is no coincidence: Lilum evokes the Lilium, the lily, and the sofa reprises its organic geometry — the curve of the petal, the delicacy of the silhouette. Antonio Citterio designs Lilum as the explicit counterpart to the Arbiter sofa: where the latter expresses rigour and composure, Lilum brings a soft, sinuous, organic quality. They are not two competing sofas — they are two complementary visions, conceived by Citterio to coexist in the same living room, to dialogue and create a formal balance between geometry and nature.

Construction: Technology and Craftsmanship

Lilum is a technically unusual project in the high-end sofa landscape. The construction technique is mixed, with a clear distinction between the two main parts of the sofa:

The Construction: Two Souls in a Single Sofa

  • General frame: steel tubes and profiles.
  • Seat frame: quality laminated multi-layer wood panel, with no nails or glue, applied with industrial precision.
  • Seat padding: differentiated-density shaped polyurethane with polyester fiber lining — the seat responds to weight progressively.
  • Backrest: moulded using Maxalto's in-house technology — the curved profile is reproduced with precision, guaranteeing continuity across all modules in a composition.
  • Backrest padding: cold-cured flexible polyurethane foam with polyester fiber lining — enveloping without sagging.
  • Lower metal edge: aluminium in four finishes: bronzed nickel, black chrome, graphite, amber.
  • Piping profiles: always in the same material and color as the chosen upholstery, they define the band between seat and base. For velvet upholstery, standard stitching is used (no piping profiles).
  • Fabric upholstery: fully removable — you can wash it or update it over time. Velvet and leather are not removable.
  • Back cushions (LIL60C): optional, in Lilum polyester fiber — for extra comfort and to personalize the seat.

Modularity: A Composition for Every Space

Lilum is built around a system of combinable modules that allow even unconventional compositions, while maintaining the coherence of the curved language. The available modules are:

  • Linear element: sofa 230×97× h. 65 cm — essential, defines the living area and works on its own, offering modern elegance, formal clarity and comfort.
  • Terminal element: in two shapes, closes the composition with a soft profile, available in two lengths: 135 or 175 cm.
  • Corner element: an element with an accentuated curve that allows corner compositions to be created.
  • Dormeuse: a standalone element that extends the composition into an elongated seat.
  • Chaise longue: a terminal element for horizontal relaxation within the composition, available in two sizes: 175 and 225 cm.

The curved Lilum modules connect with precision, creating continuous movement. The result is a composition that appears to have been drawn in a single gesture, not assembled.

Q1: The Lilum sofa has no back cushions — how does comfort work?

The backrest does not require cushions because it is moulded using Maxalto's in-house technology, which precisely reproduces the curve: the enveloping profile supports the back without the need for additions. The polyurethane foam padding maintains its shape and elastic response over time. Cushions are nonetheless available as an optional extra for those who prefer a softer seat or wish to add a decorative element.
