The first collections were born from the minds and hands of Afra and Tobia Scarpa, among the greatest Italian architects and designers of the twentieth century. Their vision was clear from the outset: not to interpret the classical as nostalgia, but as the fundamental grammar of design. From this philosophy emerged pieces such as the Africa chair and the New Harmony collection — a pursuit of materials including wood, marble, leather, and fine fabrics worked with artisan mastery; a tradition that has never become routine, but continues to be living research.

Antonio Citterio: the Modern Neo-Classical from 1993

In 1993, the artistic direction of Maxalto passed to Antonio Citterio — one of the most influential and internationally recognised Italian designers, with collaborations spanning the great names of international design. Citterio did not overturn the brand but evolved it with coherence, drawing inspiration from the Déco aesthetic and French design to build a vocabulary of "modern neo-classics": pieces that quote history without being imprisoned by it, that dialogue with contemporary architecture without surrendering the warmth of traditional materials.

Under his direction the brand's most iconic collections came to life: Febo, the seat of impeccable proportions that has become the symbol of the Maxalto style; Apollo, the seating system of sober, refined geometry; Alcor, the storage units and sideboards that transform a functional piece of furniture into an architectural element. In 2021 Citterio renewed the entire collection with a lighter aesthetic: warm tones of wengé and natural oak, bronze and chrome metals, revisited proportions — luxury without ostentation as a programmatic manifesto.
